First Exhibition Game
The Kingston Frontenacs are still in the race for first place in the East Division with a thrilling 6-5 overtime victory over the rival Belleville Bulls. The Fronts tenth win in their past 13 games, coupled with Erie’s blowout victory over Ottawa has the Fronts sitting just three points behind division leading Ottawa. “Our main focus was on just getting into the playoffs and we accomplished that last night and now that we’ve accomplished that we can set some new goals. Unfortunately we haven’t left ourselves much time, but we’ll give it everything we’ve got and see where we end up,” said Head Coach Doug Gilmour.
The Fronts and Bulls played a wildly entertaining game with nearly everything you could ask for in a hockey game. Goals, big saves, big hits, fights even a penalty shot and overtime. Belleville jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period but the Fronts exploded in the second period with four goals. Taylor Doherty scored a short-handed marker on a partial breakaway and then Ethan Werek tipped home the equalizer on the power play midway through the period. The final 63 seconds of the second period was something you didn’t want to leave you seat early for, as Corey Durocher scored a highlight of the week candidate goal, undressing half the rink before flipping a back-hander over Tyson Teichmann in the Belleville net. Mike Farrell then surprised the young Bulls puck-stopper with a wrist shot that beat him wide with seven seconds left in the period. In the final seven seconds, Clark Seymour and Kaine Geldart on ensuing face-offs got into fights. Geldart was still upset after getting absolutely hammered in the first period, when he took a pass right in the slot and was left helpless as Steven Strong stepped in and hammered the overage forward. Cameron Odam quickly came to Geldart’s aid and got into a scrap with Strong.
The Bulls scored early in the third and then were awarded a penalty shot for a chance to tie the game, but Tyler Beskorowany came up with the save. Derek Froats put a rebound home to restore the Fronts two goal lead but Kyle DeCoste scored shortly after to pull the Bulls back within a goal. Alex Aleardi completed his hat-trick goal to tie the game.
In the dying seconds, Bulls Captain Luke Judson took a holding penalty and with a face-off with eight seconds left, the Fronts setup a great chance off the face-off but couldn’t beat Anthony Peters who replaced Teichmann in the third. The Fronts started overtime with a 4 on 3 power play but couldn’t come up with the winner and as soon as the penalty ended, the Bulls transitioned up the ice and got a partial breakaway that was turned aside by Beskorowany. Froats and Werek stormed back down the ice and missed a glorious chance of their own, before Froats found Werek on the doorstep for the easy tap-in for the overtime winner and keep the Fronts hopes of winning the division alive.
