Regular Season Home Opener
After a two year hiatus, the Kingson Frontenacs are back in the playoffs, after officially clinching a playoff spot with a 5-2 win over the Belleville Bulls on a night when Keli Corpse #88 was raised to the K-Rock Centre rafters. Corpse is the all-time points leader in Kingston franchise history and was honoured in a pre-game ceremony.
As for the game itself, the Fronts controlled a large majority of the game jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Michael Fine and Ethan Werek in the first period. Fine had a puck deflect off his body and past Bulls goaltender Anthony Peters and Werek scored in his return to the lineup after missing eight games with a leg injury. Alex Aleardi tipped a Alex Basso point shot past Tyler Beskorowany late in the period to keep the Bulls in the contest but a pair of second period goals by Mitch Lebar and Derek Froats put the Fronts in complete control. The goal by Lebar to give the Fronts a 3-1 lead chased Peters from the net and saw him replaced with 16 year old rookie Tyson Teichmann. Teichman played the rest of the second period, surrendering the goal to Froats but the Bulls put Peters back in goal for the third period. Andy Bathgate scored early on the power play in the third period for Belleville but the Bulls couldn’t muster up anything else and Lebar ended the night with his second goal of the game into an empty net to seal the win and officially clinch a playoff spot for the Fronts.
The two rivals will square off again on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm in Belleville.
