Regular Season Home Opener
The Kingston Frontenacs chase for first place in the East Division took a fatal wrong turn as the Fronts dropped a 5-2 decision to the slumping Oshawa Generals, while the Ottawa 67’s won their third in a row to move within two points of clinching the division title. The Fronts now trail the 67’s by nine points with five games remaining. “Well let’s be honest, it was an uphill climb no matter what. We have been playing really well as of late, but we left ourselves very little room for error and tonight we had an error,” said Head Coach Doug Gilmour. “The important thing is to rebound tomorrow and keep playing hard and head into the playoffs on the right note,” said Gilmour.
The Fronts actually opened the scoring, when rookie Derek Froats continued his strong first season, snapping a shot past Oshawa goaltender Kevin Bailie. Oshawa rookie of the year candidate Boone Jenner tied the game banging in a rebound at the side of the net to beat Frontenacs goaltender Tyler Beskorowany. Beskorowany also turned aside perhaps the best save of the night, robbing the Generals on a short-handed 2 on 1 rush and both teams would head to the dressing room tied after the opening period.
The second period belonged to the Generals, as Scott Valentine, Christian Thomas an Jeff Brown all scored in less than a four minute span to open up a big 4-1 lead and it was a lead Oshawa would carry with them into the third period. Brown scored his second of the night early in the third period to give Oshawa a 5-1 lead, but Corey Durocher would end the night on a semi-positive night for the Fronts, scoring with less than two minutes to play.
The Fronts will need to rebound, as both teams will meet up again in Oshawa on Saturday night, with the Fronts also hosting Ottawa on Sunday afternoon, where you can purchase tickets for just $12.00
