Fronts Fall Short on Military Appreciation Night

The Kingston Frontenacs came up short on Don Cherry military appreciation night at the K-Rock Centre on Wednesday night, as the Mississauga St. Michaels Majors held on to beat the Frontenacs 4-3. Despite the Frontenacs less than stellar performance in the second period, where they surrendered three goals against, they were still in position to force overtime, after Nathan Moon’s late goal on a power play. That’s when controversy started, as Ethan Werek took a shot that got through Majors goaltender Chris Carozzi and drew the roar of the crowd behind the net as well as players below the goal-line, but after a very quick video review, the goal was deemed that the puck had not crossed the line. However, later evidence would show that the puck in fact did cross the line, which would have tied the game and forced overtime. “Well we’ll send it into the league, but I don’t think they’ll do anything about,” said General Manager Larry Maverty. “These things happen in sports. Its unfortunate and we will send it in, just to show that hey, this did happen, but we don’t expect anything to come from it,” said Mavety.

William Wallen was the difference on this night for Mississauga, as he scored three times, all in the second period and all in a row for the natural hat-trick, putting the Majors out to a 4-1 lead with five minutes to play in the second period. Mitch Lebar quickly answered for the Fronts, after Derek Froats scored in the first period. Nathan Moon gave the Frontenacs a chance of the lead, scoring a late goal and then the Werek non-goal came just seconds later. “Well I loved how we played for 5 minutes in third. If we played like that for 60 minutes, we wouldn’t have to worry about playing a desperate five minutes to try and salvage a game,” said Head Coach Doug Gilmour.

The Fronts have a day off, before returning to the K-Rock Centre on Friday night, where they will host the Saginaw Spirit.
