Frontenacs Beat Up Icedogs

Mike Farrell had an explosive night, including one highlight of the night style goal, to help pace the Kingston Frontenacs to a 4-2 victory over the Niagara Icedogs. Farrell was named first star and finished the night with a pair of goals and an assist, but the highlight goal was what most people wanted to talk about. Farrell broke in on a short-handed breakaway and put the puck behind his body and back out the other side of his legs, surprising Icedogs goaltender Mark Visentin tying the game midway through the second period. “Guys are creative and this was a creative play and I’m not gonna say anything one way or the other,” said Head Coach Doug Gilmour. “I’m more excited that we got the two points. We didn’t play very well on Friday night, but we rebounded well the rest of the weekend and that was nice to see,” said Gilmour.

The Fronts opened the scoring early in the first period on a power play, when Farrell one timed a pass from Ethan Werek coming in off the circle for the Frontenacs first home ice goal of the season. The Fronts seemed to be in control, when a broken play saw Freddie Hamilton out-skate a couple of Frontenac defenseman down the ice and barely beat goaltender Tyler Beskorowany over the glove midway through the period. Before the arena announcer could even announce the Icedogs first goal, they struck again, as Marco Insam banged in the third rebound attempt to give the Dogs the lead just 12 seconds after their opening marker. The Frontenacs, despite controlling most of the play and holding a 13-10 shot advantage, trailed 2-1 after the opening period.

The Fronts had a couple golden opportunities early in the second, none bigger than when rookie Alan Quine tucked a pass behind his back to Kaine Geldart on a 2 on 1, but Geldart was robbed with a great save by Visentin. The Fronts would tie the game shortly after, when Farrell got the highlight reel short-handed markerat 5:26 of the second period. 14 seconds later, Mitch Lebar stole the puck and walked in a snapped a shot right under the crossbar with a beautiful shot giving the Fronts the 3-2 lead. On the same shift, Lebar completed two thirds of the Gordie Howe hat-trick, just seconds later, as he dropped the gloves with Jason Shaw. A few minutes later, Cameron Odam got into a tussle with Johnson Andrews and landed some heavy duty shots early on. The Frontenacs then nearly had a scare midway through the period, when top ranked defenseman Erik Gudbranson cut into the middle of the ice and got hit with a big time hip check by Icedogs defenceman Matt Petgrave, that sent the big 6’3 Frontenacs defenceman completely upside down. Gudbranson would be ok and finished the game with no significant damage. Ethan Werek was given a penalty for coming into the aid of Gudbranson following the hit and within seconds of leaving the box, made amends for the penalty when he score an insurance marker, giving the Fronts a 4-2 lead heading to the third period.

The Fronts held off the Icedogs in the third period for the second straight time this season and for the third time in four opportunities, were able to carry a third period lead home to victory. Farrell was the first star, while Ethan Werek was the second star and Beskorowany was the third star. Newly acquired defenseman Cameron Odam was the Fronts hardest working player of the game.

The Frontenacs finished up the weekend taking four of a possible six points and will rest up for a couple days, before heading down the 401 to take on the Belleveille Bulls, their arch rivals on Wednesday night in Belleville, before hosting the very same Bulls on Friday night at the K-Rock Centre.
