Frontenacs To Honour Billet Families Prior to the Game
KINGSTON ON – Kingston Frontenacs General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations Larry Mavety announced on Monday that the team have acquired veteran forward Kaine Geldart and two draft choices (3th and 5th) in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection from the Plymouth Whalers in exchange for the Frontenacs’ first-round import selection, 6th overall, in tomorrow’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.
"With the addition of Geldart, we get a player who is gritty, plays with an edge and is committed to winning” adds Larry Mavety in an interview with the Kingston Whig-Standard. Geldart comes to the Frontenacs having spent his previous three seasons in the OHL with the Whalers, including the club’s 2007 Ontario Hockey League Championship that included a birth in the MasterCard Memorial Cup.
Geldart has made the most of his opportunity after he was selected by the Whalers in the 12th round of the 2005 OHL Priority Selection. He quickly became a fan favourite in Plymouth for his aggressive, in-your-face style of play. He was even awarded the team’s Labatt Blue Collar Player of the Year honours in 2007/08.
Geldart is a quiet leader in the dressing room who lets his actions on the ice do all the talking. "It's a pleasure to play with Geldart", former teammate and line-mate Joe Gaynor said during an interview with Our Sports Central in 2008. "He's always going in hard and is always going to finish his checks. For a little guy, he's always doing whatever it takes”.
With the trade, the Frontenacs have undoubtedly added toughness to its roster for the upcoming season. Geldart also brings an offensive upside to his game that includes 82 points in 178 career games. Last season, he posted 12 goals and 19 assists in 68 games played.
Playing his overage season for the Frontenacs will be a homecoming of sorts for the Kingston native, who was also a member of the Kingston Kimco Voyageurs for two seasons before moving to Michigan to play for the Whalers in 2006.
