Promising Start for New Frontenac in Loss

The Ryans both scored in their debuts for their new Ontario Hockey League hockey clubs on Friday night.

Former Kingston Frontenacs star Ryan Spooner hit the 100-goal plateau for his career by scoring twice for his new team — the Sarnia Sting — in Erie, Pa.

About 700 km to the northeast, the young man who came over to Kingston for Spooner, Ryan Kujawinski, scored in his first game in a Frontenacs uniform — a 6-4 loss against the Peterborough Petes at the K-Rock Centre.

The 16-year-old, by all accounts from his play Friday night, could well be a Spooner-like player by the time he is a 19-year-old player in the OHL.

"He's a player. He's got everything. He's big, he can skate and he can pass too. He made some beautiful passes to send (David) Mazurek in and (Trevor) Morbeck," said coach Todd Gill.

The Frontenacs, with Kujawinski adding an assist on Mazurek's third-period goal, cut the Petes' lead to 5-4 before giving up an empty netter.

"Everything is really positive on the bench. I just loved it," the six-foot-2 Kujawinski said.

"I loved my first game here. It's been great," said Kujawinski, who received a loud ovation from the crowd of 2,505 when he came out as the game's No. 2 star.

Kujawinski said he knew he was going to be traded for Spooner and likes where he has landed.

"It is just a great move for me on this young team to help it rebuild. I'm going to do the best I can," he said.

Gill thought his team played well in the first period but got caught out of sync in the second when Peterborough scored four times. Blake Richard was pulled after two periods. He made 21 saves.

"There's a couple goals I think Richie should have had. We put Bobber in to see if it would give us a spark," Gill said.

Goals by Petr Beranek and Mazurek did get it close. Kujawinski was out on the six-player unit with Bobkov out of the net and won the faceoff cleanly but it went between defencemen Jeff Brathwaite and Michael Moffat to the neutral zone and the Frontenacs never threatened after that.

"We lost because we made too many mistakes. That's the beauty of hockey," Gill said.

"But I like what I see. I look forward to the rest of the season but also to adding skilled players (at the draft in April)."

The first period saw two players pick up their first OHL goals.

Kingston defenceman Ryan Hutchinson's seeing-eye shot from the right point beat a screened Andrew D'Agostini.

Cody Thompson got the Petes back on even terms, cashing his own rebound. Richard, in his first start in nine games, had started out with a good series of saves.

The delay of game penalty, a bugaboo for Kingston lately, was an issue again.

A week after Kingston went short-handed three times for a player putting the puck over the boards, Warren Steele, late in the first period and Jean Dupuy, early in the second committed the offence.

The Frontenacs were two men short when Andrew Yogan banged in a down-low setup with Richard having no chance.

The Frontenacs did get it back to even terms when Kujawinski tipped in Moffat's point shot. Billy Jenkins, another newcomer, had an assist.

GAME NOTES

The Petes sat out forward Austin Watson, who is reportedly sitting at home awaiting a trade... Defenceman Alex Gudbranson was held out of the Kingston lineup while the league reviews an incident in the Thursday game in Peterborough, a 7-3 Frontenacs win. Gudbranson delivered a check to Matt Puempel and the Petes forward ended up leaving the game. He has a concussion. There was no penalty on the play. On the other side, Petes' Derek Mathers was called for a check to the head minor on Nathan Cull in the first period. Cull is now out with a concussion. Mathers was allowed to play in Friday's game. ... With Gudbranson out, Jeff Braithwaite who had been held out of Thursday's game pending a possible trade, played. With Tyler Brown traded, the Frontenacs are now playing with no one having the 'C' on. The assistant captains are Braithwaite, Cody Alcock, Moffat and Mazurek.
