It was a heavy hitting affair from the opening whistle, but a tough third period was too much to overcome for the Kingston Frontenacs (7-18-4) as they dropped a 7-4 final to the Brampton Battalion (15-10-4).
The first period started with momentum in the Frontenacs’ favour as they received a five minute power play when Battalion forward Alex O'Neil was given a game misconduct for a hit to the head of Frontenacs forward Spencer Green. The Frontenacs capitalized early with the man advantage, scoring 54 seconds into the major when Darcy Greenaway one-timed a pass from Jeff Braithwaite on the doorstep, putting it past Battalion goaltender Keegan Wilson. Kyler Nixon of Everett also recorded an assist on the Greenaway goal.
Frontenacs goaltender Blake Richard made some key saves in the first including two stops on two-on-ones, but couldn't keep the Battalion out all period as Brampton capitalized on a power play of their own. With a bouncing puck making its way back to the point, Battalion defenceman Spencer Abraham put a shot on goal from the point which was tipped in the slot by Mitchell Porowski making its way past Richard. The goal was the last by either team in the back and forth frame which was primarily played in the middle of the rink and they entered the dressing rooms tied at one.
The second period was equally tight with most of the action taking place between the bluelines. After a brief two man advantage and a delay of game call, the Frontenacs lost their edge in numbers as the teams moved to four-on-four play. Off of a faceoff, the Battalion took their first lead of the game as a point shot from Cameron Wind was tipped in by Porowski who scored his second goal off of a redirect in the contest. Four minutes later the Battalion scored their third goal of the game in identical fashion as a Wind shot was redirected past Richard by Adam Lloyd. The goal was Lloyd's first career OHL marker.
The Frontenacs responded quickly to the Lloyd tally. Less than three minutes after the Battalion increased their lead to two, Greenaway cut the Brampton lead in half when he walked over the blueline and blasted a slap shot past Wilson's blocker. The teams entered the second intermission with the score 3-2 in favour of the Battalion.
A sluggish start to the third for the Frontenacs allowed Brampton to take control of the game as the Battalion scored a power play goal less than two minutes into the frame. Barclay Goodrow slipped a puck past Richard off of a pass from Sam Carrick. The Frontenacs responded four minutes later when David Mazurek took a pass from Conor Stokes at centre ice and put his shot over Wilson's glove hand to make it a one goal game once again.
It was all Battalion after the Mazurek goal as Brampton tallied three goals in three minutes. Brandon Robinson of Pickering scored from the circle with a high shot that found its way in before Adam Lloyd scored his second goal of the game when he chased his own shot on net and barrelled through Richard to knock the puck in. Carrick scored the clincher when he batted a rebound past the Frontenacs 'tender on a scramble in front of the net.
The Frontenacs had good pressure late in the game and brought the score to within two when Tyler Brown knocked the puck in through a scrum in front of the net. It was as close as the Frontenacs would get though as the game ended with a 7-4 final score.
Philip Lane and Mitchell Porowski were named the first and second star for the Battalion while Darcy Greenaway was named third star. Lane had four assits for Brampton while Porowski had two goals on redirected shots. Greenaway had two goals for the Frontenacs in the loss.
Blake Richard stopped 24 of 31 shots in goal for Kingston, while his counterpart Keegan Wilson stopped 21 of 25 in goal for the Battalion.
The Frontenacs return to action on Saturday December 10 when they hit the road to take on the Niagara IceDogs. The Frontenacs begin a five game road trip before returning home on December 30. Puck drop in Niagara is set for 7:00 pm.
