Despite a flurry of offence in the third period, the Kingston Frontenacs (9-21-4) couldn't find the goal they needed as they fell to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors (15-14-4) by a 3-1 score.
The first period was scoreless between the two teams as they played an evenly contested period. The Majors narrowly outshot the Frontenacs by a 12-10 margin with both squads getting equal power play time in the first period. Igor Bobkov stopped all 12 shots put on goal by the Majors while J.P. Anderson turned aside all 10 shots by the Frontenacs.
Mississauga broke the deadlock early in the second period when Spenser Cobbold put a shot past Bobkov at the 2:11 mark of the frame. Alex Cord and Eric Diodati recorded the assists for the Majors. Darcy Greenaway responded for the Frontenacs ten minutes later when he took a feed from Nathan Cull and one timed a shot past Anderson. The Majors regained their lead just over a minute after the Greenaway tally when Dylan DeMelo scored a shorthanded goal with Mississauga's David Corrente in the box for interference. Jamie Wise had the lone assist on DeMelo's goal which wrapped up the scoring in the second period. Mississauga outshot the Frontenacs 16-11 in the second period en route to the one goal lead. It was a chippy period between both teams as they combined for 11 penalties between the two. Conor Stokes was ejected for the Frontenacs with a checking to the head penalty at the 5:37 mark of the frame.
The third period was all Frontenacs as they had three opportunities on the power play on their way to outshooting the Majors by a 14-7 margin. Derek Schoenmakers had the lone goal of the period for Mississauga when he beat Bobkov at the 4:50 mark of the third period. Cord and DeMelo had the assists on Schoenmakers goal. Anderson turned aside all 14 shots, stymieing the Frontenacs forwards.
J.P. Anderson was the first star of the game for his performance, turning aside 34 of 35 Frontenacs shots on goal to lead Mississauga to the win. Bobkov, Anderson's counterpart in goal for Kingston, stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced for the Frontenacs.
With the Majors' win they take a 2-1 lead in the season series thus far as the home team has won each game thus far. They will play their fourth and final matchup of the season on March 9 in Kingston.
The Frontenacs return to action on December 28 against the Ottawa 67s when they wrap up a five game road trip. Puck drop in Ottawa is set for 7:30 pm.
