The Kingston Frontenacs (8-18-4) played their second of three games in three days and beat the Niagara IceDogs (17-12-3) by a 3-2 score on the road.
The Frontenacs got the start they were looking for when Cody Alcock scored less than two minutes into the game. After forcing a turnover in the Niagara end, Alcock beat Christopher Festarini to his left side to give Kingston the early one goal lead. The goal was unassisted.
Niagara responded immediately as the IceDogs went down the ice off the faceoff following the Kingston goal and scored the equalizer nine seconds after the Frontenacs took their early lead. Steven Shipley tied the game at one when he beat Igor Bobkov who was in goal for Kingston. Shipley’s goal came off of assists from Ottawa natives David Pacan and Billy Jenkins.
The Frontenacs had the better opportunities to regain their lead, outshooting Niagara 15-9 in the first period but couldn’t find a way past Festarini.
The IceDogs had the majority of the scoring opportunities in the second period as they outshot the Frontenacs by a 14-8 margin. Despite the edge in shots the Frontenacs struck first 15 minutes into the period when Kyler Nixon’s third goal of the season went past Festarini in the IceDogs goal. Alcock and Conor Stokes recorded the assists on Nixon’s goal.
The IceDogs tied the game in almost identical fashion to their goal in the first period as Luke Mercer scored 18 seconds after the Frontenacs took a 2-1 lead. Alex Friesen recorded the lone assist on Mercer’s equalizer. The teams went into the third period deadlocked at two.
The Frontenacs got their game winner at the start of the third as Alex Gubranson scored his first goal of the season 58 seconds after the drop of the puck. Stokes and David Mazurek earned the assists on Gudbranson’s goal. It was an up-tempo third period as the teams recorded 30 shots between them with the IceDogs taking a 16-14 edge.
Cody Alcock and Conor Stokes were named the first and third star respectively for the Frontenacs while Luke Mercer was the second star from Niagara. Alcock and Stokes recorded two points apiece in the victory for Kingston.
Bobkov was stellar in goal for the Frontenacs, stopping 37 of 39 shots put on goal by the IceDogs to best his Niagara counterpart Festarini. Festarini made 34 saves in the loss for the IceDogs.
The Frontenacs return to action on Sunday December 11 with their third game in three days when they take on the Brampton Battalion on the road. It will be a rematch of their game on Friday night when a tough third period sunk the Frontenacs who came out on the wrong end of a 7-4 decision. Puck drop in Brampton is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
