Scott Metcalfe

Scott Metcalfe is one of only two players in Kingston franchise history to be in the top ten for goals, assists, points and penalty minutes. Metter scored 103 goals (10th all time), 170 assists (6th all time), 273 points (7th all time) and 571 penalty minutes (6th all time) during his 231 games played for the Kingston Canadians. Metcalfe is easily one of the best players to ever play for the Kingston Junior “A” franchise, which is evident by his first round draft selection to the Edmonton Oilers in 1985. All in all Metcalfe, had a storied career that saw him not only play and excel in Kingston, but was an Assistant Captain for team Canada at the World Junior Championships and played in the UHL, ECHL, AHL and the National Hockey League, winning a Calder Cup in the process.

Today Scott works for Labatt’s USA and lives in Rochester, New York with his wife Jane and his three kids, Tanner (10), Quinn (9) and Keegan (5). “Wow, favorite memories; well there’s definitely been a lot of them,” said Metcalfe. “Finally winning the Calder Cup after losing in the finals twice before is right at the top of the list and getting drafted in the first round by the Oilers was a special moment. Being a part of the famous Canada and Russia brawl at the World Juniors where I was an Assistant Captain would definitely be some of the main memories that come to mind,” said Metcalfe.

“I had a great time in Kingston and growing up and becoming a man and living with the Joynt family, they were a big part of my life. Margaret is one of the best people in the world that I like having a conversation with and Neil is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and their kids Sarah and Richard, they all made me feel like a part of their family. We also had a nice playoff run in Kingston, especially because we weren’t expected to go as far as we did.”

Metcalfe spent nine seasons with the Rochester Americans racking up 349 points and also played five years in Europe. “I played in Berlin, Sheffield and Hanover and it was nice because I was able to see a lot of Europe,” said Metcalfe. “I played on a lot of great teams, twice in Rochester we had awesome regular seasons and were way up in first place, but we fell short both years in the Calder Cup finals and then the year we won it, we were in last place at Christmas and got a couple guys back from Buffalo and got hot and the right time and we finally won it, so those three would be at the top of the list.”

“My favorite junior coach would be Rick Cornacchia and just because he never let us take a night off. He was a tough disciplinarian style coach, but it was good for us and he was a really good man. I also think the year he got fired, he got fired too early,” said Metcalfe. “My favorite pro coaches are John Van Boxmeer and John Tortorella. Boxey pushed me hard every night and as a young player, that was good for me and what I needed and we won the Calder Cup with Tort’s and as a veteran player, he kinda let me be and trusted me to do my own thing.”

“I had a great time in Kingston and I grew into a man there and it is a big part of my life, but life takes you down different roads and although I’d love to be back around home, I’m very happy with where I am in life living here in Rochester.” “I think the Frontenacs and the Kingston organization should have some kind of wall of fame, because although we never won a championship, there have been a lot very good players come through the organization and I’m proud to have played in Kingston,” concluded, #10 Scott Metcalfe.

BEST HOCKEY ADVICE:

Work as hard as you can and then once you’ve done that, work a little bit harder because if you don’t, someone else will.
