RBC Amateur Hockey Scholarship for Undergraduates Program Guidelines 2010

Objective
The purpose of this program is to promote post-secondary education by providing scholarship opportunities for students currently playing amateur hockey in Ontario. Scholarships are funded by the RBC Foundation.

Number of Awards
Up to eighteen (18) entrance scholarships are available, to be awarded each year. Two (2) scholarships will be allocated per participating team:
1 to a female student and 1 to a male student in grade 12 who plays amateur hockey.

Value and Duration of the Awards
Up to $5,000 CDN is available over a maximum of four academic years for students enrolled in a Canadian College or University. This is providing that the recipient maintains a full-time course of study, as determined by the institution, with an overall average of 70%, or recipients will be required to provide proof of academic standing at the end of each academic year. Each scholarship will provide $1,000 per year for the first three years of an academic program, and $2,000 for the fourth year (should a program of study continue beyond three years). Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the University or College attended by the recipient.

NOTE: If a scholarship recipient is accepted into the first year of their first professional degree program (such as law, medicine, education, etc.,) while receiving the RBC Amateur Hockey Scholarship they may, at the sole discretion of RBC, qualify for the final year(s) of the scholarship funds to be applied towards that professional degree program. However, no recipient will be entitled to scholarship funds for more than a total maximum of four consecutive academic years, or the equivalent.

Requirements for Eligibility
Eligible applicants must:

Be entering the first year ^[1] of their first undergraduate degree or diploma at an eligible institution and eligible program (as defined below)
Be a 2010 registered player in a local Minor Hockey and/or High School hockey team in Ontario
Be a Grade 12 student graduating in June 2010
Be planning full-time attendance at an eligible institution starting no later than September 2010
Be able to provide proof of acceptance to RBC no later than June 15, 2010. If a potential recipient cannot provide proof of acceptance by this date, RBC reserves the right to award the scholarship to another candidate
Have a minimum average of a B, OR 70% (Canadian percentage scale or the equivalent GPA) at mid-term in Grade 12
(Non-academic courses such as career or personal development related courses will not be considered)
Be currently playing amateur hockey in Ontario

Eligible applicants must provide:

An official transcript of their mid-term or final results from
Grade 12 ^[2]
Two signed reference letters:
1) From their hockey team coach, which includes a description of the students leadership on the team, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey
2) From a teacher, school counsellor or principal certifying
the candidate’s academic achievement, positive attitude and
school citizenship
One page (maximum 250 words) essay on one of the
following topics:
a) The Impact of Hockey on Canadian Society
b) Greatest Hockey Memory
c) The Future of Women’s Hockey in Canada
d) How does volunteering benefit your community?

Eligible Institutions:
Canadian educational institutions which have provincial degree/diploma-granting powers, or their affiliates (e.g. Universities and Colleges).

Eligible Programs:

There are no restrictions on the program of study or discipline
Programs must be a minimum of a two-year duration
University preparatory programs in any jurisdiction are not eligible (e.g. CEGEPs - pre-University diploma)

Selection of Scholarship Winners:
Winners will be chosen based on the materials submitted by the candidate. Selection of winners will be made by a committee made up of employees of RBC Royal Bank and/or the RBC Foundation, including regional Vice-Presidents and an RBC Olympian. Decisions of the committee are final and conclusive, and by submitting an application the candidate agrees to abide by the decision of the committee.

Evaluation criteria are as follows:

Academic performance (25%)
250 word essay (40%)
Quality of reference letters (one from a teacher/counsellor or principal, and one from the applicant’s hockey coach) (35%)

Responsibilities of Scholarship Recipients:
If selected as a recipient of a scholarship, students will be required to:

Sign a declaration of compliance and publicity release, authorizing Royal Bank of Canada to use the name, likeness, school, hockey team and hometown of the recipient for promotion of the scholarship program
Where school schedules permit, attend a recognition night hosted by RBC formally announcing the winners of the RBC Amateur Hockey Scholarships
Send proof of registration from the educational institution you
will be attending
Use the scholarship funds in the year it is awarded
Send RBC an official transcript at the end of each academic year and complete an annual Renewal Report.

Payment:

RBC will forward payment of the scholarship funds directly to the educational institution
If, after tuition is paid, there are funds to the credit of the student held by the institution, payment will be made by the institution to the student in accordance with the normal practice of the educational institution

Application Deadline
Applications must be received by mail (no e-mail or electronic applications will be accepted) and sent to the Community Marketing Manager – Amateur Hockey Scholarship Awards on or before April^1st, 2010 at the address below. RBC is not responsible for any lost or incomplete applications, and will not communicate with any applicants unless selected as a winner.^[3]

Termination of this Scholarship Program
RBC retains the right to amend and/or terminate the scholarship program at any time without notice.

^[1]	Students who have previously received an RBC scholarship will not be eligible to apply or reapply.

^[2]	Only official transcripts will be accepted. Photocopies will not be accepted unless they bear the original signature with school stamp or seal.

^[3]	Failure to forward all required supporting documents will automatically result in the application being deemed ineligible for consideration. RBC will not be responsible for collecting missing documents.
