The Kingston Frontenacs played their inaugural game at the K-Rock Centre on February 22, 2008, against the Belleville Bulls. A sold out crowd of 5700 were in attendance for this historic evening. Pregame ceremonies began at 6:00pm and saw various dignitaries including representatives from Brisbane Brooke Baynum, EillsDon, Arcturus SMG, K-Rock Radio Station, Chamber of Commerce, KEDCO, Kingston Accomodation Partners, Downtown Kingston and the owners of the Kingston Frontenacs Hockey Club. The second portion of the ceremonies included a passing of the torch from former Kingston Canadians and Kingston Frontenacs captains to current Kingston Frontenacs captain Justin Wallingford. Honored alumni that were able to attend included Tony McKegney, Mike Moffat, Chris Clifford, Keli Corpse, and Marc Moro. Also present was Kingston native Don Cherry who joined Harvey Rosen for the ceremonial faceoff. It was a simply a breathtaking experience for everyone who witnessed it.
The game officially started at 7:45pm. Belleville Bulls forward Matt Beleskey scored the first goal in the K-Rock centre netting his 38th goal of the year to open the scoring. The score remained in Belleville's favor until midway through the second frame with Frontenacs player Andris Dzerins tied the game. The Bulls quickly responded, as Beleskey once again found the back of the net behind goaltender John Murray. Just a mere 22 seconds later Beleskey found the twine again for the hat trick. Assisting on both of his goals were Jan Mursak and overage forward Adam Perry. The second frame ended 3-1 in the Bulls favor.
The Frontenacs closed the gap late in the third on a goal by Josh Brittain. His 22nd goal of the season was assisted by Andris Dzerins and Nathan Moon. It would not be enough though as the Bulls held onto defeat the Frontenacs in a close 3-2 game. Both teams could not capitalize on the powerplay and final shots ended with Kingston tallying 34 while Belleville had 29. While the end result was not in the win column this game signified a new era in Kingston Frontenacs Hockey. It was truly a night to remember as we passed the torch into the future.
